Etiquette

At Port Townsend Ballet, we foster an environment of respect and focus to support excellent dance education. Below are essential guidelines to ensure a positive and safe experience for all:

Attire & Appearance:

Students must wear the proper class uniform and have their hair properly styled for each class. If unsure, please visit our website for attire guidelines: DRESS CODE. Only stud earrings and small band rings without stones are allowed; all other jewelry and watches must be removed before class. Street shoes are not permitted on the studio flooring.

In-Studio Etiquette:

No food, drinks, chewing gum, street shoes are allowed on the studio floor

Please lower your voices when entering our single room studio and SILENCE ALL CELLPHONES

Punctuality:

Students should arrive a minimum of 5 minutes to warm up quietly in our foyer. Arriving 5+ minutes late will require the student to sit and observe as it will not be safe for them to dance without a proper warm-up. After class, students should be picked up promptly no more than 5 min after the end of the lesson. Students who fail to receive timely pickups will be supervised for safety but will no longer be welcome to participate in classes after 3 late pick-ups.

Supervision & Waiting Room Conduct:

Students must be under parental supervision when not in the studio. Children are not allowed to explore the property unattended. Please keep noise levels outside the buildings to a minimum.

Classroom Conduct:

Students must challenge themselves not to socialize during their lesson but direct all attention to the instructor, their technique, and the learning process.

Movement & Positioning:

Students should aim to finish each exercise in the instructed stance by waiting until the music ends.

For ‘across the floor’ sequences’ dancers are to be alert, & ready to cross in tandem with their group.

Dancers are to run to the back of the room and around the perimeter of the floor when exiting for the restroom

Respect for the Barre:

Students are not permitted to hang on the barres.

Warm-Ups:

Form-fitting sweater warm-ups are allowed in cold weather but must be removed to see alignment when requested by the instructor.

End of Class:

Students will be intructed on how to curtsy to show respect for their teacher. A verbal ‘thank you’ and quick ‘clap clap clap’ is customary in the dance world and will prepare them to succeed in future master classes, summer intensives away from home, and professional auditions.

Regular Attendance:

Regular attendance is crucial for improvement. Students who miss too many classes may lose their ability to perform in our annual productions of The Nutcracker or Spring Showcase.

Hygiene:

REUSABLE WATER BOTTLES MUST BE TAKEN HOME EACH WEEK: Every year students bring their reusable water bottles to class & leave them at the studio between lessons. These bottles become ‘slimy’/moldy and the students instead use the studio’s disposable paper cups while these bottles multiply - taking up valuable square footage in our small foyer. Teachers will do their best to remind students to retrieve them but we ask parents to also remember to check on the whereabouts of their child’s waterbottles. (We thank you!)

Bacterial & fungal pathogens are common causes of conditions such as Athlete’s Foot but are preventable. At PTB we take measures to sanitize our studios DAILY. To help us avoid the spread:

Please alert your teacher - We promise to keep this information confidential and will NOT shame you

Bring alcohol spray to wipe your barre & section of the marley down

Keep infected areas covered (or ideally, double covered) at ALL times

Wash all clothing between lessons, & spray your dance shoes to disinfect & sanitize.

Your adherence to these guidelines helps us maintain a professional and respectful learning environment. Thank you for your cooperation!
