CONTEMPORARY PLACEMENT -class descriptions

  • JAZZ 1

    In Jazz 1 kids 6-9 develop a basic understanding of historic & contemporary jazz dance techniques emphasizing proper anatomical alignment, moving together as a unit. coordination, and musicality.

  • JAZZ 2/3

    Jazz 2/3 dancers aged 10-16 continue the study of historic & contemporary jazz on an intermediate level. Emphasis is placed on leaps, turns, phrasing, stylistic versatility, dynamic movement, and refining detail.

  • TAP 1

    Tap 1 is designed specifically for young dancers ages 5-7. In this class, children will learn the fundamentals of rhythm, and coordination, Students learn to control the sounds coming from their feet with different strikes, weight shifts, and tempos. Although seemingly unrelated, tap is an excellent adjunct to ballet to help students understand how to count & manipulate music.

  • TAP 2

    Tap 2 is for tappers aged 8-14. In this class we connect the language of Tap to create phrases known as the classic Broadway style 'Time Steps'.

  • CONTEMPORARY 1

    Contemporary 1 for ages 8-11 employ concepts such as stabilization, breath support and functional alignment to develop control over their body. Students will learn how to integrate basic movement skills into combination work while developing coordination & musicality.

  • CONTEMPORARY - LYRICAL 2/3

    Contemporary and Lyrical dance, both subgenres of Jazz dance, blend elements of ballet, jazz, and modern dance. Contemporary dance emphasizes versatility and improvisation while Lyrical connects to musical expression. Contemporary/Lyrical levels 2 & 3 fusion classes combine the expressive and technical aspects of both styles, focusing on proper technique, body placement, alignment, and control.

  • HIP HOP 1

    Hip Hop 1 introduces young breakers ages 7-10 to the foundational techniques of isolations, grooves, and simple footwork patterns. In this class, we work on building coordination, rhythm, and musicality while learning beginner-level combinations that are fun and age-appropriate. The class emphasizes body control, precision, and the ability to move in sync with the beat.

  • HIP HOP 2

    Level 2 Hip Hop is ideal for dancers aged 10-18 who have a couple of years of dance experience or have completed Hip Hop 1 and are ready for a new challenge. In this class we'll engage in a thorough warm-up session to prepare their bodies, followed by a detailed breakdown of intermediate Hip Hop techniques and stylistic movements. The class emphasizes developing more complex isolations, intricate footwork, and fluid transitions. Students will then apply these skills by putting together short, dynamic routines that challenge their coordination, rhythm, and musicality. This class is perfect for young dancers looking to deepen their understanding of Hip Hop and enhance their performance skills.

  • ADULT CONTEMPORARY

    In this Adult Contemporary Dance Practice, we explore total mind/body awareness and integration through dance. The class begins with a series of floor exercises that are based on the Bartinieff Fundamentals and the Bill Evans Technique. We also build on improvisational skills and personal style, as these studies can provide a sense of ownership of the movement. The standing technique exercises concentrate on balance and coordination. Across-the-floor phrases focus on stability and mobility. The class concludes with a repeatable dance phrase of choreography that we build upon.
    (Note: Dancers wear comfortable clothes that they can move freely in and are welcome to wear socks or bare feet.)
